Identify your transferable skills

What you indicate on you resume as tasks could be much more useful to you if they were positioned as skills.  Employers may not see as much value in learning about what you did in your last job, as they would in identifying skills that they can utilize.  Of course if you are applying for a job in the…     Read more

Taking the stress out of dressing for interviews
Taking the stress out of dressing for interviews
An interview is not a fashion show or a parade, and how you are dressed should be of little consequence in the grand scheme of things.  In fact, if an interviewer takes note of how you are dressed, it may bode against you. Your attire should simply suit you and suit the environment.  If it somehow catches the interviewer’s attention, it may be that you’ve overdressed or underdressed, or otherwise stepped outside of the norm for this particular place.  The interviewer’s attention should be focused on you, not your outer shell.  You should look pleasing to the eye overall, without drawing focus to any particular feature.

Having said this, I submit the following:
In dressing for an interview, there are two simple rules.  Be yourself and dress the part.

I do not buy into the theory that you should have a suit for an interview. For starters, if you don’t typically wear suits, you will look awkward and unnatural.  And if you get the job, you will also be unable to live up to the impression you made during the interview.  Yes you should have an appropriate outfit, but it should reflect the type of job in question, and more importantly, it should be an accurate reflection of how the employer can expect to see you looking every day at work.  Do not go out and buy an outfit just for interviews if you won’t wear it again after that, or if it in no way suits the job.

You should be comfortable during an interview.  You should appear at ease with yourself, and right in your element.  Wearing an outfit that is not your natural style will compromise your comfort, and ultimately, your confidence. Logic would suggest that if you are targeting a job that is right for you, then you are probably naturally inclined to dress appropriately for it.

More important than what you choose to wear, is the condition of the clothing.  The condition of what you are wearing will in fact say more about you than the selection itself.  Proper fit is extremely important.  Poorly fitting clothing look sloppy.  Anyone can put on an Armani suit, but we do not all look the same in it.  Your clothing should be freshly laundered and pressed, if necessary.  Appearing untidy or unkempt will make a negative impression about your organizational skills.  It also speaks to how you will represent the company in the eyes of the client, so make sure you are dressed in such a way that would make the employer proud to introduce you to key investors. The rule that should go without saying is: be professional.  This is not the place for sex appeal, and it’s not the place to make political statements or advocate a rock group.  Avoid branding of any kind.

Generally, clean crisp cuts with solid colors are perfect.  Limit patterns and wild textures as they are distracting. And finally, dress for the weather.
