Identify your transferable skills

What you indicate on you resume as tasks could be much more useful to you if they were positioned as skills.  Employers may not see as much value in learning about what you did in your last job, as they would in identifying skills that they can utilize.  Of course if you are applying for a job in the…     Read more

Networking versus Job Hunting
Networking versus Job Hunting
Networking has long been an effective way to land a great job.  In fact, it can often lead to far greater opportunities than traditional job hunting.  This is because networking has unlimited potential.  When you decide to include a networking campaign as part of your job search, you are opening yourself up to an unlimited, untapped market of jobs where there is no competition.

Let’s look at the difference between pursuing posted jobs and networking.

Pursuing publicly posted jobs comes with a set of circumstances and procedures. You must apply by a certain date and address a certain individual who may or may not be the final decision maker. You must wait to be invited for interview and when you do interview, you must prove your qualifications. You will be in competition with an unknown number of other applicants. You must demonstrate a greater sincerity in the organization than the other candidates as well as demonstrate a greater ability to fit the role

When you look at it this way, you might conclude that very little in your future is really in your own hands. Everything is already set in place and you have little to say about it.

On the other hand, when networking, you are launching from a different starting point with a different set of rules and circumstances, many of which will prove to be in your favor. In the case of networking, you will have contacted an organization out of a sincere interest in them, and you’ll have an advantage, since they weren’t expecting to hear from you. You might secure a meeting with the person you want to a talk to, without having to file your way through a system. You will be the only person of interest to this potential employer, who isn’t interviewing multiple candidates.  Since you asked for the meeting, you will likely be leading the discussion, and you can point it in any way you like. Because there is no job hunt at play, the interview will be far less structured.  You will now have made a contact. You will now have open, ongoing access to this individual, present and future. You will have access to this individual’s colleagues and business associates, who may be equally willing to meet with you. You will be front and center in the mind of that decision maker when he identifies a need for a new employee and; subsequently, will have made the job easy for him.

Networking is very powerful and should be included with any serious job search campaign.
