Identify your transferable skills

What you indicate on you resume as tasks could be much more useful to you if they were positioned as skills.  Employers may not see as much value in learning about what you did in your last job, as they would in identifying skills that they can utilize.  Of course if you are applying for a job in the…     Read more

Qualifying your References
Qualifying your References
When employers contact the professional references of an applicant, they are not looking for a series of complimentary observations. They are trying to assess how this person will respond to certain situations and whether this individual will fit the culture of their establishment. There are really no right or wrong answers when it comes to giving a reference. Employers want to talk to people who have worked with you to find out about your work ethic.

They seldom investigate things like whether you are friendly or easy going, unless this directly pertains to the job.  In fact, sometimes when people give a reference they focus too hard on what they deem to be the positive points and neglect to communicate the pertinent points that would matter to the employer.

For instance, if your past employer liked you because you always arrived on time and often brought coffee for your coworkers may be of absolutely no consequence to the person who is currently thinking of hiring you. The job may require you to travel, to work alone, and to set your own hours. A “friendly” reference about your team member attitude may inadvertently convey to the boss that you are very much a people person who will likely not be able to adapt to being alone and on the road most of the time.

When deciding on a reference, consider the relationship that you had with this person, and which of your attributes are more likely to have been of significance. Try to choose references that will make notable mention of the same attributes which are likely to be of significance to the current employer. Some job seekers ask for letters of recommendation from past employers. This has its advantages in that you control much of the content of the letter. However, letters have less impact to the employer because they cannot ask direct questions or clarify a certain point. Also, depending on how many different positions you are targeting, one form letter may not be sufficient; each reference should be crafted to each job. Before settling on anyone to give you a reference, speak with them first. Discuss the job you are applying for so they understand the type of role it is and the nature of the work. Prepare them to focus on the things you want to emphasis to the new employer. If one of your chosen references feels he or she has insufficient information to contribute on certain subjects about you, find someone else.

Your references will have an enormous influence, and you should be certain that they will reaffirm the impression you already made with the employer.
