Identify your transferable skills

What you indicate on you resume as tasks could be much more useful to you if they were positioned as skills.  Employers may not see as much value in learning about what you did in your last job, as they would in identifying skills that they can utilize.  Of course if you are applying for a job in the…     Read more

Proper Networking Etiquette
Proper Networking Etiquette
Making new contacts through an existing network is an extremely effective way to get in front of potential employers and create opportunities. It is important, however, to make every impression a strong and positive one. You cannot afford to risk leaving a new and possibly valuable contact with a negative impression.

If you’ve already had some success at getting people to meet and talk with you then you are doing something right. But there is more to successful networking than just getting a meeting. When making new contacts through networking, you will have great success if you remember these basic rules in etiquette:

1. Come prepared. A person’s time is valuable. If you have asked them for a meeting they will expect that you have prepared the discussion and have a specific direction in mind.

2. Don’t make them do the work or leave them feeling as though their time is being wasted.

3. Never ask for a job. While a job is the ultimate goal, you will immediately make the contact uncomfortable by asking for something that he cannot give you. People do not like to say no.  Had you stated that you were looking for a job in your introduction e-mail, he may not have agreed to meet with you.

4. Never state a referral without permission. If you want to use a mutual acquaintance as a referral, make sure you have permission upfront. Mentioning the name of an acquaintance without his permission can backfire or cause embarrassing situations for you and for others.

5. Follow up.  Always send a thank you e-mail or make a thank you phone call. Make reference to any subsequent meetings you had as a result of your discussion with him/her. This reassures the contact that you were serious and that their time investment was not wasted.

6. Stay in touch. An occasional email just to touch base will indicate a sincerity and respect. It will also keep you fresh in their mind. More importantly, is it a sign of excellent relationship -building skills.

7. Practice appropriate persistence. If you are remaining in touch with a particular contact, be sure to avoid leaving the impression that you are waiting for him to offer you a job.

8. Pick up the check. Because you called this meeting, it should be made as effortless and convenient as possible for the other person. You should buy the coffee.

A lot of this may seem like common sense but it bears repeating. A poor approach to networking can have a devastating effect but a good approach can open countless doors and opportunities.
