Identify your transferable skills

What you indicate on you resume as tasks could be much more useful to you if they were positioned as skills.  Employers may not see as much value in learning about what you did in your last job, as they would in identifying skills that they can utilize.  Of course if you are applying for a job in the…     Read more

Your dream job is yours to create Some of the best jobs aren’t advertised anywhere.  In fact, often times, an employer doesn’t even recognize the need for a particular form of expertise until it is positioned in front of him.
This is the result of effective networking, and it is far more common that we realize.

You can spend hours browsing job boards and applying to positions that are only somewhat reflective of your goals.  You can take a position that is reasonably close to what you want, and wait for the role to evolve.  But jobs defined by employers may not equate to your dream job.  This is because employers can’t see what a particular candidate has to offer until they start meeting people, at which point the position has already been defined.

If you know what you want to do for a living, and where you want to do it, the next step is truly yours to take.  There is no point in waiting for that company to post your dream job… it might never happen.  And if it does, you will be up against countless other candidates.

The key to obtaining your dream job is to go out and make it happen.

Once you’ve identified the company that you want to target, and you have defined exactly what you propose to do for them, you just need to get in front of the right person in the organization and present your proposition.

Getting a decision maker to agree to see you shouldn’t t be very hard.
Most people like being asked for help.  And they enjoy feeling like they contributed to someone else’s success.   If you state that you are looking for a job, you may get some resistance, because remember that they have no job to offer you at this time.  But if you present yourself as someone who is researching the industry or has a proposition or a business idea, you stand a very good chance of getting their attention.

Once you are in the presence of a decision maker, you are already a lot farther ahead than if you had waited to respond to a job posting.

What you have essentially done is created an interview for yourself.  But beyond that, you have shown initiative, and the assertiveness to get things done.  You have impressed upon this potential employer that you take responsibility for your own success, and that you are driven, ambitious, and resourceful.

Realistically, the chances of landing an immediate job offer are very slim.  But you are now in the best possible position with this employer if and when a job does come up.  And beyond that, your discussion may have proved to be thought provoking, and he may start to question his corporate needs.  You may in fact have identified a need that this employer had previously overlooked. In other words, you have created your own position.
